Dario W. Diehl is a marine biologist who serves as the Cross Departmental Technical Support Department's Reserach Coordinator. He specializes in the implementation of biological, chemical, and oceanographic field sampling techniques. He is involved in water quality projects at SCCWRP, including freshwater bioassessments in local streams and contaminant surveys in coastal waters of Southern California. He performs logistical and statistical analyses and provides field assistance for marine fisheries investigations. He has identified soft and hard bottom marine fishes in the Southern California Bight for more than 30 years. Over these years, he has dissected thousands of fish and collected thousands of sediment samples for contaminant analysis. He has aided recovery of endangered species by releasing inadvertently captured steelhead and limited or paused sampling projects within estuaries during light-footed clapper rail nesting periods. He was also involved in the logistical coordination, collection, and dissection of fish used in a study contracted from the California Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (California Department of Health Services). He has completed NOAA Mussel Watch sampling in the Southern California Bight. In addition, he was the project manager for a monitoring contract for a seawater desalination plant located in the Los Angeles Harbor. He works on Slocum glider data analysis during deployments in the Southern California Bight. In addition, he is involved with various regional monitoring projects pertaining to coastal ecology and ocean water quality. He became an FAA drone pilot and has been working with a multi-spectral sensor to evaluate its potential for integration into various monitoring programs within Southern California. He is the field safety officer at SCCWRP, serves as quality assurance officer on various research projects, and is involved in standardizing monitoring methods for future surveys.

He is familiar with word processor (Microsoft Word), spreadsheet (Microsoft Excel) database (Microsoft Access), graphic (Jandel Sigmaplot), statistical (Jandel Sigmastat, Systat, SAS, R), and GIS (Mapinfo, ArcGIS) computer software, as well as programming languages such as Microsoft Quickbasic, Borland Pascal, Fortran, Matlab, Python, Survey123). He has used field sampling equipment such as an otter trawl, gill net, beam trawl, Van Veen grab, box core, gravity core, CTD, current meter, microlayer, sediment trap, underwater pump, Slocum glider, sediment profiling camera, and other underwater cameras. He is also experienced in laboratory procedures involving water quality, tissue dissection, chemical extraction procedures through the clean-up step, fish lipid extraction, and particle filtration and quantification.

He received his B.S. in marine biology from California State University, Long Beach, in 1982. He joined SCCWRP in 1983.
